A smoothie bowl is a smoothie thick enough to eat with a spoon, finished with crunchy toppings. This one blends frozen mixed berries, a banana and coconut milk into something close to soft-serve.

Making it at home costs less than buying one at a juice bar. Frozen berries are usually cheaper than fresh, keep for months and are what make the bowl thick in the first place.

It takes five minutes and one blender.

Ingredients and Swaps

  • Frozen berries: Any mix of strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries. Store-brand bags are a good value.
  • Banana: Adds sweetness and creaminess. For the thickest bowl, slice and freeze it first.
  • Coconut milk: Carton coconut milk keeps it light. Canned coconut milk makes it richer. Any milk works if you don’t have coconut.
  • Chia seeds: They thicken the bowl and add fiber. Ground flaxseed or a spoonful of oats can stand in.
  • Toppings: Granola, fresh fruit, coconut flakes, nuts or seeds.

Tips for a Thick Smoothie Bowl

  • Go easy on the liquid. Start with ½ cup. Add more a tablespoon at a time only if the blender stalls.
  • Keep the fruit frozen. Thawed fruit makes a drinkable smoothie, not a spoonable bowl.
  • Stop and stir. Turn off the blender and push the fruit down toward the blades as needed.
  • Chill the bowl. A few minutes in the freezer keeps the smoothie from melting while you add toppings.

Smoothie Bowl Questions

Can I make it without banana?

Yes. Use ½ cup of frozen mango or ¼ of an avocado for creaminess, and add a little honey if it needs sweetness.

How do I add more protein?

Blend in ¼ cup of Greek yogurt, a tablespoon of peanut butter or a scoop of protein powder.
