This Cranberry Pecan Cheese Ball is the easiest way to keep hungry guests happy while the turkey finishes. Cream cheese and sharp white cheddar get mixed with dried cranberries, green onion and a little garlic, then rolled in toasted pecans and more cranberries.
Holiday appetizers can get expensive fast, especially with grocery prices where they are. This one uses two blocks of cream cheese and a handful of pantry staples, and it feeds a crowd for less than a store-bought cheese board.
It’s also completely make-ahead. Mix and shape it up to three days before, then roll it in the pecans and cranberries the day you serve it so the coating stays crunchy.
Set it out with crackers, apple slices or celery sticks about 20 minutes before guests arrive so it’s soft enough to spread.
Ingredients and Swaps
- Cream cheese: Two blocks, softened. Full-fat holds its shape best.
- Cheddar: Sharp white cheddar, shredded from a block. Yellow sharp cheddar works.
- Dried cranberries and pecans: Some go inside and the rest coat the outside. Walnuts or sliced almonds can replace the pecans.
- Green onions, Worcestershire and garlic powder: For savory depth.
Tips for a Cheese Ball That Holds Its Shape
- Soften the cream cheese. It mixes smoothly at room temperature.
- Shred your own cheddar. Pre-shredded cheese doesn’t blend as well.
- Shape it in plastic wrap. Scoop the mixture onto the wrap, gather the edges and twist to form a ball without sticky hands.
- Chill before coating. A firm ball is much easier to roll in the toppings.
- Let it sit before serving. Fifteen minutes at room temperature makes it spreadable.

Cranberry Pecan Cheese Ball
Ingredients
Method
- Toast the pecans in a dry skillet over medium heat for 3–5 minutes, stirring often, until fragrant. Let cool.
- In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese, cheddar, Worcestershire, garlic powder and pepper until smooth.
- Stir in half of the cranberries, ¼ cup of the pecans and half of the green onions.
- Scoop the mixture onto a sheet of plastic wrap, shape it into a ball and wrap tightly. Chill for at least 1 hour, until firm.
- Combine the remaining pecans, cranberries and green onions on a plate. Unwrap the cheese ball and roll it in the mixture, pressing gently so it sticks.
- Let it sit at room temperature for 15–20 minutes, then serve with crackers, apple slices or celery.
Notes
- Shred the cheddar yourself; pre-shredded cheese doesn’t blend as smoothly.
- Swap pecans for walnuts or sliced almonds.
- Yellow sharp cheddar works if that’s what you have.
- For a party, shape the mixture into 12 mini cheese balls instead of one large one.
Make-Ahead & Storage Tips
- Make the cheese ball up to 3 days ahead. Wrap it tightly in plastic and refrigerate without the coating.
- Roll it in the pecans, cranberries and green onion the day you serve it.
- Leftovers keep in the fridge for up to 5 days. Don’t leave it out for more than 2 hours.
- The uncoated cheese ball freezes for up to 1 month. Thaw overnight in the fridge, then coat.
