Feeding a family of 4 on $50 a week is hard, especially with grocery prices where they are now. It can be done, but it takes a plan built almost entirely on the cheapest staples: oats, eggs, beans, lentils, rice, pasta and canned tomatoes.

We built a full 7-day plan and priced every item at Walmart and ALDI. Here’s what it looks like, what it costs and where it falls short, so you can decide what works for your family.

This post shares general budgeting information, not personal financial advice.

Can You Really Feed 4 People on $50 a Week?

Yes, but it’s a lean week. The full shopping list for this plan came to $49.82 at Walmart and $47.08 at ALDI. To get there, the plan is meatless, uses frozen vegetables in place of most fresh produce and leaves almost no room for snacks, drinks or extras.

If you can, pair a plan like this with help that stretches your food budget further, like SNAP, WIC or a local food pantry. Our food pantry recipes guide has links to find all three. If you have a little more room, our $100 a week meal plan adds meat, more fresh produce and snacks.

The Week at a Glance

Each day lists breakfast, lunch and dinner, in that order.

  • Monday: Oatmeal with banana and peanut butter · Peanut butter and banana sandwiches · Vegetable lentil soup (double batch)
  • Tuesday: Scrambled eggs and toast · Bean and cheese quesadillas · Tomato and butter rice with black beans
  • Wednesday: Oatmeal with banana and peanut butter · Leftover lentil soup · Spaghetti with marinara
  • Thursday: Scrambled eggs and toast · Bean and cheese quesadillas · Chickpea curry over rice
  • Friday: Oatmeal with banana and peanut butter · Peanut butter and banana sandwiches · Veggie fried rice
  • Saturday: Banana oat pancakes · Leftover spaghetti and lentil soup · Black bean rice bowls with cheese (make extra)
  • Sunday: Oatmeal with banana and peanut butter · Leftover black bean rice bowls · Breakfast for dinner: scrambled eggs and toast

Shopping List with Prices

Prices are from Walmart’s and ALDI’s websites for stores in Columbus, Ohio, checked in October 2026. Ohio’s grocery prices are within about 1% of the national average, so you may pay more or less depending on where you live, and prices change often. Here’s how we price our recipes.

Every item is the store brand. Where ALDI’s website didn’t list an item, we used the Walmart price in the ALDI column.

How to Make $50 Go Further

  • Cook big batches. The lentil soup, spaghetti and rice bowls each cover more than one meal.
  • Stretch milk and broth with water. Oatmeal and soups taste fine with half water.
  • Watch for sales on eggs and cheese. They’re the items most likely to swing your total.
  • Use every banana. Brown ones go into pancakes or oatmeal.
  • Shop the whole list at one store. Driving between stores to save a few cents rarely pays off.

$50 a Week Questions

Is this plan nutritious enough for kids?

It includes protein from eggs, beans, lentils and peanut butter, plus whole grains, dairy, fruit and vegetables every day. It’s light on fresh produce, so add fruits and vegetables whenever your budget allows, and talk to your pediatrician or a registered dietitian about your child’s specific needs.

Can I add meat to this plan?

A pound of ground turkey was $1.98 at Walmart when we checked, so it’s the easiest addition. Brown it into the tomato rice or the black bean bowls.

What if my family eats more?

Add another bag of rice, more beans and another loaf of bread. They’re the cheapest way to make every meal bigger.

How can I get help with groceries?

SNAP helps pay for groceries, WIC helps families with young children, and food pantries offer free food, often the same week. Call or text 211 to find help near you.
