A freezer stocked with the best freezer meals is what keeps a tired weeknight from turning into a $40 takeout order. Spend one afternoon cooking, and you’ll have several dinners that only need to be baked or reheated.
These five freezer meals cost under $2 a serving at Walmart and ALDI prices, and each one has a tip for freezing it well. After the recipes, you’ll find how to freeze, thaw and reheat, how long meals keep, and what not to freeze.
Why Freezer Meals Work
You cook once, portion it out and get several dinners from one afternoon. Freezer meals are especially useful for:
- Busy weeknights
- New parents
- Budget-friendly meal planning
- Avoiding last-minute takeout
Prices are from Walmart’s and ALDI’s websites for stores in Columbus, Ohio, checked in October 2026. Ohio’s grocery prices are within about 1% of the national average, so you may pay more or less depending on where you live, and prices change often. Here’s how we price our recipes.
The Best Freezer Meals to Prep Ahead
1. Chicken Enchiladas
Rolled tortillas with chicken, cheese and red sauce. They freeze unbaked and go straight into the oven later.
Savvy Bite tip: Assemble completely, cover tightly in foil, and freeze before baking. Add extra enchilada sauce before freezing to keep them moist.
Why it works: The tortillas soak up the sauce as they freeze and thaw, so they come out soft and saucy rather than dry.
Time: 45 minutes · Serves: 8
Cost: Ingredients – $12.73 from Walmart, $12.04 from ALDI · Per Serving – $1.50 to $1.59
2. Beef Lasagna
One pan feeds ten, so a single lasagna can cover two family dinners or a week of lunches.
Savvy Bite tip: Freeze in disposable foil pans for easy reheating and zero cleanup stress.
Why it works: Pasta, sauce and cheese hold up well in the freezer, and the layers stay intact when you reheat.
Time: 1 hour 30 minutes (30 minutes of prep) · Serves: 10
Cost: Ingredients – $18.24 from Walmart, $16.56 from ALDI · Per Serving – $1.66 to $1.82
3. Turkey Chili
Ground turkey, beans and tomatoes simmered into a big pot of chili that portions out easily.
Savvy Bite tip: Let it cool completely before freezing in individual portions for quick lunches or dinners.
Why it works: Chili freezes about as well as anything, and it reheats from frozen on the stove.
Time: 50 minutes · Serves: 6
Cost: Ingredients – $8.66 from Walmart, $8.78 from ALDI · Per Serving – $1.44 to $1.46
4. Chicken Pot Pie
Creamy chicken and vegetable filling under a flaky crust.
Savvy Bite tip: Freeze the filling separately from the crust for best texture, then assemble before baking.
Why it works: With the filling already in the freezer, a homemade pot pie takes only the time to top and bake it.
Time: 45 minutes · Serves: 6
Cost: Ingredients – $9.06 from Walmart, $8.36 from ALDI · Per Serving – $1.39 to $1.51
5. Breakfast Burritos
Eggs, cheese and fillings rolled in tortillas. They work for a fast dinner as well as breakfast.
Savvy Bite tip: Wrap individually in foil and freeze in a large bag for grab-and-go convenience.
Why it works: Each one reheats in the microwave in a few minutes, so everyone can eat on their own schedule.
Time: 40 minutes · Serves: 8
Cost: Ingredients – $9.93 from Walmart, $10.00 from ALDI · Per Serving – $1.24 to $1.25
How to Freeze, Thaw and Reheat
- Cool it first. Let cooked food cool, then get it into the fridge or freezer within 2 hours.
- Wrap it well. Air causes freezer burn. Cover pans with plastic wrap and then foil, and press the air out of freezer bags. A vacuum sealer is useful if you freeze meals often.
- Label everything. Write the name, the date and the baking instructions on the package so nobody has to look up the recipe.
- Thaw in the fridge. Move the meal to the refrigerator the night before. A full pan of lasagna can take a full day.
- Reheat until hot in the center. Leftovers and casseroles should reach 165°F in the middle. An instant-read thermometer takes out the guesswork.
How Long Do Freezer Meals Last?
Food kept frozen at 0°F stays safe, but the quality slowly drops. For the best flavor and texture, use casseroles, chili and burritos within about 3 months.
What Doesn’t Freeze Well
- Pasta in soup: it turns soft. Freeze the soup and add fresh pasta when you reheat it.
- Cream and milk sauces: they can separate. Stir well as they reheat, or add the dairy after thawing.
- Crisp toppings: breadcrumbs, tortilla chips and fresh lettuce go on after reheating.
- Raw potatoes: they turn grainy. Cooked potatoes in a casserole hold up better.

Freezer Meal Questions
Should I cook a freezer meal before freezing it?
It depends on the dish. Enchiladas and lasagna are best assembled, frozen unbaked and baked later. Chili and soups should be fully cooked, cooled and then frozen.
Can I bake a casserole straight from frozen?
In a foil or metal pan, yes. Keep it covered, plan on extra time in the oven and check that the center is hot. Glass dishes can crack when they go from the freezer to a hot oven, so thaw those in the fridge first.
What containers are best for freezer meals?
Disposable foil pans for casseroles, freezer bags laid flat for chili and soup, and foil-wrapped burritos stored together in a large bag.
